1 Peter 5:2-4 NIV
2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
CHRISTIAN MOTIVATIONS FOR DOING JUSTICE
– My over-simplistic summary by David E Fitch
Two prominent motivations for Christian social engagement with injustice are a) Jesus saved me from my sin so I now see others differently, b) Jesus is my example/teacher, I want to follow his example (these are traditionally the evangelical and protestant liberal drivers).
A third motivation is c) Jesus is at work in these social spaces, and by my presence I cooperate with Him and can make Him known, helping to bring His work to completion.
a) and b) can result often in doing things for justice out of my own effort. I can become impatient and frustrated, over confident in my agenda. I can also become proud.
There is a different motivation in c) which leads to patience, listening, depending on the Spirit, humility, vulnerability and eventually gospel.
Luke 15:4-6 NIV
4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’

Matthew 25:35-40 NIV
35 For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited Me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you came to visit Me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and invite You in, or needing clothes and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick or in prison and go to visit You?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of Mine, you did for Me.’
Proverbs 31:8-9 NLT
8 Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves;
ensure justice for those being crushed.
9 Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless,
and see that they get justice.
